Superman fans are in danger: NSSC specialists created a list of the most common passwords

“123456” is the most widely met among hacked passwords. This conclusion made specialists from UK National Cyber Security Centre, NCSC, making their first cybersecurity research.

NCSC analysts took as a basis Hanter Troj’s base «Have I Been Pwned» and extracted 100 000 most frequently used passwords. Results can surprise people that are experienced in cybersecurity.

Most popular passwords was “123456”, it was used in 23 millions of hacked accounts. «123456789», «qwerty»,«password» and «1111111» follow it. Most popular names that are used in passwords are Ashley, Daniel, Jessica and Charlie.

Very common are used passwords, connected with football prime-league. Liverpool is a “champion” here while second place belongs to Chelsea. Among music fans, most widely exploited name of American rock-group Blink-182.

In addition, research demonstrated that people prompt to use as passwords own names, football club names, names of musicians and superheroes, as a superman.

During the research NCSC specialists also asked users about cybersecurity measures and main concerns. 42% of respondents are afraid to lose money because of Internet-fraud while only 15% are aware how to protect themselves online. Less than half of respondents use unique complicated password for their main work emails.
